Venezuela has cut diplomatic ties with Paraguay after President Santiago Pena endorsed opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the winner of the July 2024 elections. Venezuela has officially severed its diplomatic ties with Paraguay following the Paraguayan President Santiago Pena’s support for Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, an opposition candidate in Venezuela’s recent presidential elections. The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry stated, “The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has decided, in full exercise of its sovereignty, to break diplomatic relations with the Republic of Paraguay and proceed with the immediate withdrawal of its accredited diplomatic personnel in that country.”

President Pena’s endorsement of Gonzalez Urrutia took place during a phone conversation, where he acknowledged him as the victor of the controversial elections that were held in July 2024. Pena had also discussed the Venezuelan political situation with Gonzalez Urrutia and prominent opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, emphasizing the necessity of facilitating a democratic process in Venezuela. The Venezuelan National Electoral Council declared that President Nicolas Maduro won reelection with 51.2% of the vote, while Gonzalez Urrutia and the opposition claim a victory with 67%.

Following the election disputes, Venezuela had previously retracted its diplomatic representation from several countries in the region, including Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. Gonzalez Urrutia has actively engaged in regional diplomacy, meeting with leaders in Argentina and the United States, where he discussed his presidential prospects with President Joe Biden. Biden acknowledged Gonzalez Urrutia’s political campaign, stating, “Today I hosted Venezuela’s President-elect Edmundo Gonzalez, a man whose campaign inspired millions and one who should be taking the oath of office in four days.”

Gonzalez Urrutia is scheduled to embark on a tour of Panama and the Dominican Republic as part of his efforts to consolidate international support for his claim to the Venezuelan presidency.
