Deported Migrants Describe Harrowing Journey on ‘Donkey Route’ to the U.S.

A recent deportation of 104 Indian migrants from the U.S. highlighted the harrowing realities of illegal immigration. A recent flight from the United States, a C-17 military aircraft, transported 104 Indian immigrants from various states back to Amritsar. Among these deportees, many individuals recounted harrowing experiences on their journey through the so-called ‘donkey route’, which included immense physical challenges and tragic encounters during their travel to the United States. One of the deported individuals described the hardships faced, stating that he traveled through Italy and Latin America before attempting to reach the U.S.

One deportee from Punjab spoke about the extreme conditions of the journey, mentioning theft of their clothing and the grueling physical toll. “We crossed 17-18 hills. If one slipped, then there would be no chance that he would survive… We saw dead bodies,” he lamented, highlighting the perilous nature of the trek.

In addition to the physical challenges, other deportees also discussed financial exploitation by unscrupulous travel agents. One individual, Jaspal Singh, stated he was deceived into paying ₹30 lakh for what was promised as a legal journey to the United States, stating, “I had asked the agent to send me through a proper visa. But he deceived me.”

His journey included flying to Brazil before attempting the illegal border crossing into the U.S. after being assured of an air travel continuation, further emphasizing the risk he took after being betrayed by those he trusted.

Upon their arrival in Amritsar, the deportees were met by government agencies, including Punjab Police and intelligence officials, who interrogated them as part of routine procedures to determine any potential criminal backgrounds and to manage the repatriation process.

The issue of illegal immigration has become prevalent in the context of globalization and economic disparity. Many individuals attempt to enter the United States through dangerous and irregular channels, often facing exploitation and grave risks.
