Mass Grave of Migrants Discovered in Libya Amid Ongoing Migration Challenges

The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office identified 28 migrant bodies in a mass grave near Kufra and liberated 76 detained migrants. The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office reported on Sunday the discovery of 28 bodies presumed to belong to irregular migrants. These remains were unearthed near a detention center located north of Kufra in southeastern Libya. In conjunction with this discovery, 76 migrants were liberated from forced confinement.

Forensic experts have been consulted to ascertain the cause of death, and the Prosecutor’s Office is actively gathering testimonies from the migrants who were detained. Moreover, three individuals, comprising two foreigners and one Libyan, are scheduled for questioning by investigative authorities.

In a related incident, a criminal case has been initiated against the head of the Coast Guard branch in Zuwara City. Four Coast Guard members have been arrested for allegedly scheming to transport illegal migrants across the Mediterranean, during which they reportedly discharged firearms at officers attempting to interfere with the operation.

Following the interrogation of the suspects, authorities have decided to hold them in custody while they continue extensive investigations. The remaining migrants are to be relocated to shelter centers pending the resolution of their situations, as indicated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Additionally, the Libyan Ministry of the Interior has apprehended a significant number of Egyptian irregular migrants and handed them over to Egyptian authorities as part of a broader initiative to strengthen security and combat illegal migration. The ministry has confirmed that patrols from the Joint Security Room in the Western Mountains were instrumental in detaining the migrants along with stolen vehicles.
