NiDCOM Calls for Investigation into Abubakar Lawal’s Suspicious Death in Uganda

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has described the circumstances surrounding the death of Abubakar Lawal, a former Nigerian junior international and player for Vipers SC of Uganda, as questionable. In response, NiDCOM is committed to demanding a comprehensive investigation into this unfortunate incident.

Lawal’s death was reported by his football club and the Ugandan Police, initially attributed to a motorcycle crash. However, subsequent statements from law enforcement suggested that he fell from a shopping mall balcony in Kampala, leading to further scrutiny of the events that transpired.

According to Ugandan police sources, Lawal had visited a shopping mall to meet a friend and was last seen preparing tea before reportedly falling from the balcony around 8:00 AM. Despite being rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

Following the tragic news, prominent Nigerians, including Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, who was a former teammate of Lawal, expressed their concerns. Chairman Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that the discrepancies in the reports surrounding Lawal’s death raise suspicions and warrant a thorough investigation by relevant authorities.

Dabiri-Erewa stated that NiDCOM is in active communication with Nigerian and Ugandan authorities, calling for justice for Lawal. She mentioned that the Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has been proactive, with Ambassador Shama Shanga engaging local authorities to ensure a detailed inquiry into the incident.

Describing the situation as “pathetic and suspicious,” Dabiri-Erewa reiterated the need for a transparent investigation and urged the Nigerian Government and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to cooperate with Uganda in seeking justice for Lawal. She expressed condolences to his family during this difficult time, wishing them strength in their loss.
