Nigeria Calls for Investigation into Footballer Abubakar Lawal’s Death in Uganda

The Nigerian government has demanded a full investigation into the suspicious death of footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda. The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed her deep concern regarding the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death, describing it as highly troubling and unclear.

Ambassador Shama Shanga, the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in Uganda, has also called for a detailed autopsy and an exhaustive inquiry into this tragic occurrence. In her statement, Dabiri-Erewa commented, “This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover-up at all. This is so sad!”

The Kajjansi Police Division has initiated an investigation into the death of Abubakar Lawal, a professional player for Vipers Sports Club. Reports indicate that Lawal fell from the third floor of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade on February 24, 2025, shortly after arriving at the mall in his vehicle. He had come to meet his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national.

Naima recounted that she left Lawal in her room preparing tea while she visited a game center within the mall. Tragically, he was reported to have fallen from the balcony at approximately 8:00 AM and was later pronounced dead at Entebbe Referral Hospital.

Authorities retrieved various items belonging to Lawal, including mobile phones and training gear, from his backpack. To clarify the incident’s details, investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interviews.
