Adelabu Commissions 990kWp Solar Mini-Grid Project in Niger Community
Chief Adebayo Adelabu has inaugurated a 990kWp solar hybrid mini-grid project in Lambata Community, Niger State. This initiative will provide consistent electricity to approximately 3,500 households and local industries. The REA CEO highlighted the alignment of this project with efforts to improve electricity supply across various bands while discussing further expansions and financial support.
The Honorable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has officially launched a 990kWp solar hybrid mini-grid project aimed at improving electricity accessibility for the Band D and E populations in the Lambata Community, situated in the Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State. This initiative is expected to benefit around 3,500 households, including local small-scale businesses, by providing them with a consistent electricity supply.
During the commissioning event, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Mr. Abba Aliyu, commended the Minister’s commitment to enhancing power generation in Bands A, B, and C while ensuring a dependable supply for the lower Bands D and E. He remarked, “The purpose of this project is aligned with the Minister’s strategy to enhance reliability for Bands D and E. While the Minister is focused on boosting generation for Bands A, B, and C, we are also working from the ground up to ensure reliability for Bands D and E.”
Mr. Aliyu elaborated that this project forms a part of a broader strategy to establish 40 interconnected mini-grids in partnership with seven different distribution companies. He also indicated that a recent visit to Japan has led to negotiations for additional financing amounting to $200 million, which will be utilized to implement an extra 100 interconnected mini-grids throughout Nigeria.
Minister Adelabu affirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to the sustainable operation of the solar project in the long term. He further stressed that the REA is committed to developing the essential capabilities required for the ongoing maintenance of the energy systems implemented in the region.
