INAM Forecasts Cyclones Honde and Garance Impacting Madagascar and Mozambique

INAM has predicted two tropical storms, Honde and Garance, potentially turning into cyclones affecting Madagascar. Honde, located off the coast of Mozambique, may cause strong winds and rainfall, while Garance poses no threat to the mainland. INAM advises precautionary measures, especially for maritime navigation.

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has forecasted the formation of two tropical cyclones, named Honde and Garance, between Thursday and Friday, affecting the southern and eastern regions of Madagascar. Moderate Tropical Storm Honde is currently located approximately 250 kilometers off the coast of Inhambane province in Mozambique and is advancing southward towards Madagascar.

As Honde progresses, it is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone by Friday, February 28, resulting in strong winds across the Mozambique Channel. Additionally, light to moderate rain, and locally heavy precipitation in certain areas of Mozambique, can also be anticipated. Meteorologist Lelo Tayob stated that although this system is offshore, its substantial size impacts the atmospheric circulation, leading to rainfall on land.

Tropical Storm Garance, on the other hand, is moving to the east of Madagascar and may also evolve into a tropical cyclone. However, this system is not expected to threaten Mozambique. “Tomorrow, [Tropical Storm Garance] will evolve into a tropical cyclone, but given its size, location, and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country,” Tayob clarified.

Despite the limited direct impact on land, INAM urges precautionary measures, especially regarding maritime navigation, in response to these meteorological events.

In summary, while Tropical Storm Honde threatens to bring strong winds and rainfall to parts of Mozambique due to its influence on atmospheric conditions, Tropical Storm Garance is not a concern for the mainland. INAM emphasizes the importance of safety measures during these atmospheric phenomena, particularly for maritime activities.
