Kamrul Islam, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi, was shot dead in Wepener, South Africa, by two assailants during a robbery. He had been living in South Africa for twelve years and was planning to return to marry soon. His family is seeking assistance from the Bangladeshi embassy for the repatriation of his body, while local officials have offered support during this difficult time.

On Thursday evening, a tragic incident in Wepener, South Africa, resulted in the death of 33-year-old Kamrul Islam, a Bangladeshi national. Originally from Karmullahpur village in Daganbhuiyan upazila, Feni, Kamrul had relocated to South Africa twelve years prior in pursuit of better economic opportunities, ultimately establishing his own business after working for a short period.

According to Kamrul’s younger brother, Kamruzzaman, the victim was targeted by two assailants while he was closing his shop at approximately 9:00 PM. The assailants, armed with a gun, robbed him of cash and valuables. As they suspected he kept more money in his car, they forced him towards the vehicle, where a confrontation ensued resulting in Kamrul being shot in the chest, leading to his immediate death.

Kamrul had recently completed construction of a new home in his native village and had plans to return to Bangladesh soon for marriage. His brother shared that their family is deeply affected by the loss, particularly their mother, who has been in distress since receiving news of the tragic event. The family has reached out to the Bangladeshi embassy for assistance in repatriating Kamrul’s body.

The local upazila administration, represented by SM Azharul Islam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, has expressed readiness to provide support to Kamrul’s family in facilitating the return of his remains.

The unfortunate death of Kamrul Islam underscores the ongoing risks faced by expatriates, particularly in regions with heightened crime. His family’s grief reflects the intertwined lives of migrants who venture abroad in search of better opportunities but occasionally encounter tragic circumstances. Additionally, support from both family and local authorities highlights the importance of community in overcoming such unexpected tragedies.
