Tropical Cyclone Jude Causes Tragedy in Mozambique and Malawi

Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in nine deaths across Mozambique and Malawi, with significant displacement and infrastructure damage hindering relief efforts. Mozambique reported six deaths, while Malawi confirmed three, leading to the homelessness of over 20,000 individuals in impacted areas. Heavy flooding marked the cyclone’s path, further complicating humanitarian responses.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has left a tragic toll across Mozambique and Malawi, with officials confirming the death of at least nine individuals. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported that six fatalities occurred, alongside 20 injuries and the displacement of 9,525 residents in the provinces of Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia. Meanwhile, Malawi has experienced three deaths and over 20,000 individuals left homeless due to severe flooding in its southern region.

The disaster struck early Sunday in northern Mozambique and subsequently affected southern Malawi, causing extensive flooding from Monday through Wednesday. Chiphiliro Khamula, spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, stated that displaced individuals are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has highlighted that relief efforts are being significantly obstructed by washed-out roads and bridges, complicating access to affected areas. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that a similar calamity occurred in December of the previous year when Cyclone Chido resulted in 73 fatalities in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
