Elvis Lenzy, born Elvis Inyarubuga on July 2, 2003, in Ngoma District, Eastern Province, is rapidly emerging in Rwanda’s music scene, particularly with his debut single “Tina” released in January. Raised by his aunt after losing his parents at a young age, Lenzy began his education at New Life Christian Academy in Kayonza before moving to Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village, a school renowned for fostering musical talent. At Agahozo, he gained his first studio experience, recording and collaborating with peers who continue to influence his career.
Lenzy engages with various musical genres, primarily Afrobeat, while incorporating diverse sounds into his work. “I just want to make music that feels good—to me and to the people listening,” he states, emphasizing his versatility as he explores Afrobeat, dancehall, and trap. His breakthrough track, “Tina,” is a collaboration with former schoolmate Flambeau, showcasing a blend of smooth melodies and Afro-fusion rhythms, establishing him as a notable new talent in Rwanda.
Following his initial success, Lenzy released “Akanyambo” on March 14, a song dedicated to a remarkable girl inspired by the elegant Inyambo cattle, symbols of pride in Rwandan culture. This track features rich Kinyarwanda-English lyrics that express heartfelt emotions. Both songs, produced by Flambeau, highlight his cultural roots, while the “Akanyambo” video was directed by Burundian filmmaker John Elarts, known for his work with Rwandan artists.
Lenzy emphasizes a fluid approach to songwriting, stating, “Sometimes I write everything beforehand; other times, I start with melodies and build from there.” Despite garnering attention, he maintains a humble perspective. “I never set expectations. I just do what I have to do and let the people decide,” he shares regarding his artistic process.
Looking forward, Lenzy expresses ambition to expand his musical presence in Rwanda. “There’s a lot more music coming, and not just music—I have many projects in the works,” he reveals, underscoring his commitment to his craft and willingness to collaborate with like-minded artists.
