Armed Raid on Former Bank of Ghana Governor Raises Security Concerns
On March 19, 2025, Richard Jakpa led a raid on former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence with twenty armed men. The team disabled the CCTV, searched for alleged cash vaults, and left without finding anything. This incident highlights increasing security issues for former officials in Ghana.
On March 19, 2025, the private residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison was raided by a team of twenty armed men, led by Richard Jakpa, the Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat. Dr. Addison was present during the incident, which occurred in the morning at his home located in Roman Ridge, Accra. The armed personnel arrived brandishing AK-47 rifles and were partially masked, aiming to conduct an aggressive search of the premises.
Upon arrival, the team promptly disabled the home’s CCTV system and demanded that Dr. Addison disclose the location of any secret vaults. Shocked by the accusation, Dr. Addison calmly informed them that he did not possess any vaults or significant cash at his residence. Nevertheless, the team persisted, allegedly ransacking the house searching for evidence but ultimately found no vaults or large sums of money.
Subsequent to their unsuccessful search, the National Security personnel took the CCTV control unit and monitor with them. The Addison family, including Dr. Addison’s wife, reportedly experienced severe trauma due to the raid. A retired senior official from the Bank of Ghana commented, highlighting the unprecedented nature of such an event against a former Governor, stating, “This is both scary and messy.”
This incident marks the second raid orchestrated by Jakpa against notable former officials associated with the previous Akufo-Addo administration since the inauguration of President John Mahama on January 7, 2025. The first prominent target was Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister, whose residence was also breached by armed men on February 10, 2025. CCTV footage of Ofori-Atta’s raid was later publicly released, raising security concerns across the nation.
The raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home by heavily armed men, led by Richard Jakpa, represents a troubling trend of aggressive actions against high-profile former government officials in Ghana. With this incident marking the second such occurrence in recent months, it raises significant concerns regarding the safety and security of former appointees in the current political climate. The trauma experienced by the Addison family further underscores the need for stability and respect for individual safety within the nation.
