Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber Selected for Research Seminar in Dakar, Senegal

Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber of UDC had been selected for a two-week seminar in Dakar, Senegal, focusing on West Africa and its diaspora. The seminar aims to enhance global perspectives for U.S. faculty and includes several educational activities. Participants are expected to implement projects that foster internationalization at their campuses post-seminar.

Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber, the director of the Division of Humanities and Criminology at UDC’s Community College, has been selected to attend a prestigious two-week research seminar in Dakar, Senegal, scheduled from January 3 to 21, 2024. This program is part of the CAORC-WARC 2024 Faculty Development Seminar, a highly competitive initiative of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, in collaboration with the West African Research Center.

This seminar, which includes visits to significant locations such as Goree Island, Toubacouta, and Saint-Louis, is designed to provide faculty and administrators at U.S. community colleges and minority-serving institutions with a fully funded opportunity to enhance their global perspective. The objective is to enrich students’ cultural awareness while fostering vital skills in critical thinking, communication, and leadership.

Titled “West Africa and the Diaspora: Continuities and Transformations,” the seminar will encompass lectures, site visits, panel discussions, and film screenings focused on Senegal’s history, culture, arts, economy, and political life, emphasizing the links between West Africa and its diaspora. It will particularly explore Senegal’s spiritual diversity and the region’s transnational movements affecting youth.

Participants are required to create and execute a project that promotes internationalization at their respective campuses within a year following the seminar’s conclusion. Subsequently, they will submit a project report along with curriculum materials for inclusion on CAORC’s Open Educational Resources site. Additionally, each participant must contribute a short article for the CAORC blog, Field Notes, within three months after the seminar.
