Incident Unfolds as National Security Raiders Invade Home of Former BoG Governor Dr. Addison

A raid conducted by National Security personnel on the home of Dr. Ernest Addison, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has elicited shock and concern. The armed team, led by Richard Jakpa, reportedly disabled security systems and searched for cash vaults, yielding no findings. This incident illustrates a worrying trend of aggressive actions against former officials in Ghana.

On March 19, 2025, a concerning incident unfolded when approximately 20 armed personnel, led by Richard Jakpa of the National Security Secretariat, raided the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana. The armed group, some donning balaclavas and armed with AK-47 rifles, targeted the property located in Roman Ridge, Accra, while Dr. Addison was present.

Upon their arrival, the security team disabled the property’s CCTV system and insisted that Dr. Addison guide them to any vaults within his home. According to reports from Asaase Radio, Dr. Addison denied having any vaults or significant amounts of cash. Despite the lack of findings, the armed personnel allegedly searched the premises thoroughly.

No vaults or cash were discovered during the raid, and the security forces proceeded to confiscate the CCTV monitor and control unit. Dr. Addison and his family reportedly experienced significant distress following the invasion, according to a close associate.

A retired central bank official expressed his alarm regarding the incident, stating it marked a historical first for Ghana, indicating a troubling trend with law enforcement actions against high-ranking officials. This raid by Jakpa and his team is noted to be the second instance of such high-profile invasions since the inauguration of President John Mahama on January 7, 2025. Previously, on February 10, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta, the longest-serving finance minister, faced a similar raid at his home in Labone, Accra.

The raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence highlights rising tensions within Ghana’s political and security landscape. Conducted by a National Security team, this unprecedented action has raised significant concerns regarding the treatment of former government officials. The incident reinforces the need for transparency and accountability, particularly in law enforcement operations targeting high-profile individuals.
