In Windhoek, a multidisciplinary team is prepared to address the situation, including officials from Human Settlement, Roads and Storm Water, Emergency Services, Disaster Risk Management, and City Police. This team is ready to relocate vulnerable communities to safer areas if necessary.

Between January and March 18, the City of Windhoek responded to 21 flood-related incidents, significantly affecting over 280 households in Otjomuise. On March 18, 181 informal dwellings were relocated to Farm 508 in Goreangab. Notably, last month, one vehicle was swept away at Robert Mugabe and Sean McBride Street, and the city has sadly recorded three deaths since the beginning of March.

In response to the ongoing flooding, the City has implemented mitigation measures such as stockpiling sandbags and ensuring drainage systems remain clear. Residents are advised to evacuate to higher ground, avoid swimming in flood-prone areas, and keep vital documents dry and accessible.

Drivers are encouraged to take alternative routes when faced with flooded streets, abandon stalled vehicles if necessary, and adhere to traffic laws and instructions from law enforcement. Caution is advised while driving on wet roads.

The City’s Flood Standby Team continues to monitor the situation and inspect stormwater facilities throughout the rainy season. Regular updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
