Surveillance footage indicates that Konanki was with her group, which consisted of five women and two men, moving toward the beach around 4:15 a.m. They apparently returned at 5:00 a.m., yet Konanki and Riibe were absent from the group.

He has cooperated with authorities, stating he met Konanki the previous night and that they kissed in the ocean prior to being struck by a wave. Riibe claims he assisted her from the water before she left to gather her belongings while he became ill and fell asleep on the beach.
