Gabon’s Constitutional Court has recently sanctioned a list of eight candidates for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for next month. Among the approved candidates is interim President Brice Oligui Nguema, who ascended to power following a military coup in 2023. This development raises eyebrows as transitional leaders traditionally do not participate in elections, yet a new constitution passed in November exempts Nguema from this restriction.

The junta’s portrayal of the constitutional referendum as a path toward democratic governance has sparked skepticism among opposition groups and analysts, who fear an extended grip on power. Nguema, who is 50 years old, dismantled the longstanding control of his predecessor Ali Bongo and established military rule over Gabon, which is rich in oil yet faces poverty.

The primary contender against Nguema is Alain Claude Billie By Nze, aged 57, who served as Bongo’s last prime minister and is now contesting as an independent candidate. Other candidates approved include Stephane Germain Iloko Boussengui, a former member of the Gabonese Democratic Party, and tax inspector Joseph Lapensee Essigone. Notably, the election features only one woman candidate, Gninga Chaning Zenaba, a Gabonese entrepreneur.

The upcoming presidential election in Gabon, set for April 12, sees interim President Nguema and seven other candidates vying for leadership.
