Mozambique Police Officer Sentenced for Kidnapping Lottery Winner

A police officer in Mozambique has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for kidnapping a lottery winner, marking a deviation from typical abduction cases in the area. In Mozambique, a police officer has been convicted alongside two accomplices for their involvement in a high-profile kidnapping case. All three individuals received 30-year prison sentences in March for abducting a recent lottery winner, diverging from the typical profile of kidnapping victims in the region. This incident, occurring in November 2023, targeted Alan Boene, who won approximately 4.58 million meticais (about 72,000 US dollars) in the lottery.

The convicted individuals include Eurico Tembe, a member of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR), along with accomplices Gilberto Mandlate and Sergio Bambo. They kidnapped Boene and demanded he surrender his winnings in exchange for his release. Rather than profiting from the crime, they were apprehended by law enforcement, although the specifics of their capture remain unclear.

In addition to their lengthy prison sentences, the court ordered them to compensate Boene 1.7 million meticais. Furthermore, it ruled that the vehicle used in the kidnapping and Tembe’s residence would be forfeited to the state. The defence attorneys have indicated plans to appeal the court’s decision, aiming to overturn the rulings made against their clients.
