Toyota Set to Establish New R&D Facility in India by 2027

Toyota is poised to establish a Research and Development (R&D) facility in India by 2027, marking a significant advancement for the Indian automotive sector. This initiative will be implemented through Toyota’s Indian subsidiary, which has been operational for over 25 years.

The new R&D center will be located in Bengaluru, adjacent to Toyota’s existing manufacturing facility in Bidadi. As reported by Bloomberg, this center will be the third of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region, following those in Thailand and China. It is expected to create approximately 2,000 jobs and add another 3,000 engineers in the forthcoming two years.

Initially, the facility will focus on the Indian market’s demands but aims to eventually cater to the global automotive sector. This development has the potential to transform India into a key hub for Toyota’s research and manufacturing operations, with plans to design models for markets including the Middle East, East Asia, and Oceania.

Furthermore, Toyota intends to evaluate Suzuki’s R&D facilities in Rohtak, which is one of India’s major automotive engineering centers with around 3,000 employees. The strong partnership between Toyota and Suzuki has already produced successful models like the Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder and Maruti Grand Vitara.

Having previously considered an R&D center in 2010, Toyota is now reinforcing its collaboration with Suzuki to enhance R&D and product development efficiency. Notably, Toyota holds a 5.4% equity stake in Suzuki and aims to leverage this partnership for the development of electric vehicles in India.

In related news, Maruti Suzuki is set to launch the e Vitara, its first electric vehicle in India, in the next few weeks. Toyota has also introduced the Urban Cruiser EV, an iteration of the e Vitara, which was unveiled last year and will be produced at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant for global export.
