Sudan’s Army Chief Returns to Khartoum Following Airport Recapture

The Sudanese army announced the recapture of Khartoum’s international airport, facilitating the return of army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan to the capital for the first time in two years amid ongoing warfare. Upon his arrival, Burhan celebrated with troops, proclaiming the liberation of Khartoum from opposing forces. His presence signals progress for the military against the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Video footage captured Burhan kissing the ground and raising his fist triumphantly upon landing, rallying troops while declaring, “Khartoum is now free. It’s over. Khartoum is free, as it should be.” The control over the airport, alongside improved stability in Khartoum, may enable humanitarian organizations to deliver much-needed supplies to the affected populace.
