NDLEA Arrests Lagos Businessman for Importing Cannabis from the US
The NDLEA has arrested Lagos businessman Arokodare Damil Ebenezer for importing 60 parcels of cannabis from the US. The agency seized 32.24 kg of the drug during this operation. Additional arrests took place for tramadol smuggling, revealing a significant increase in drug-related interceptions in Nigeria.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended Arokodare Damil Ebenezer, a Lagos-based businessman and owner of Damillionz Takeout, for allegedly importing cannabis from the United States into Nigeria. The arrest occurred at the Bay Lounge in Lekki, with the 43-year-old suspect expecting to receive a shipment of 60 parcels of Loud, a powerful strain of cannabis, as confirmed by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi.
On March 12, NDLEA operatives from the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation intercepted the suspect’s shipment at a logistics company in Lagos. Following his arrest, a subsequent search of his Lekki residence yielded an additional 94 grams of cannabis, along with a crusher and other drug paraphernalia, resulting in a total seizure of 32.24 kilograms.
The suspect admitted to engaging in drug trafficking since 2017, stating, “In his statement, he claimed he started the illicit drug business in 2017.” In separate operations, other NDLEA officers arrested Omoruyi Terry at Murtala Muhammed International Airport for attempting to smuggle 1,400 tramadol pills to Italy, along with actions in Katsina where 423 kilograms of compressed skunk and diazepam pills were seized, leading to the arrest of four individuals.
Recent NDLEA operations also included the destruction of 13,198 kilograms of cannabis sativa in Edo and several other significant drug seizures throughout the nation, such as 179 blocks of compressed skunk in Niger State and 108.5 kilograms in Enugu. This marks a noticeable increase in NDLEA’s drug interception activities, as highlighted by the agency’s previous seizures of cocaine and tramadol shipments in recent months.
The NDLEA has made significant strides in combating drug trafficking in Nigeria, as evidenced by the recent arrests and seizure operations conducted across various states. The apprehension of individuals like Arokodare Damil Ebenezer underscores the ongoing challenges associated with drug smuggling. The agency’s proactive measures have resulted in substantial drug confiscations and a heightened commitment to curtailing drug-related activities.
