Russia’s Perspectives on Saudi Diplomacy Amid Ukraine and Regional Conflicts

Dmitry Polyanskiy critiques U.S. policy on Ukraine, suggesting it escalated conflict. He highlights the potential for Saudi Arabia to become a diplomatic hub and emphasizes the importance of united Arab efforts on issues like Palestine and Sudan. Additionally, he affirms Russia’s supportive stance towards Assad’s transitional challenges in Syria, focusing on long-term relations with the Syrian populace.

In an interview with Arab News on the program “Frankly Speaking,” Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s first deputy representative to the United Nations, criticized the Biden administration’s involvement in Ukraine, stating it worsened the conflict rather than resolving it. He asserted that the U.S. had provoked Russia, leading to the escalation that resulted in Moscow’s military operation in February 2022.

Polyanskiy contrasted the Biden administration’s approach with that of former President Donald Trump, suggesting that Trump’s perceived realism could potentially halt hostilities in Ukraine. He characterized the recent discussions held in Saudi Arabia as pivotal, with prospects for an agreement to ease tensions and sanctions.

He praised Saudi Arabia’s role in fostering international diplomacy, suggesting it could become a diplomatic capital, particularly for Russia-Ukraine negotiations, citing its proactive efforts in organizing talks among key nations.

In addressing the crises in Gaza and Sudan, Polyanskiy reiterated Russia’s support for Palestinian rights and a two-state solution, stressing that progress hinges on Arab nations’ unified action. He acknowledged Russia’s limited leverage over Israel compared to the U.S. and emphasized the necessity of collective Arab efforts to address the Palestinian issue effectively.

Regarding the Sudan conflict, Polyanskiy voiced support for the Sudanese authorities against the Rapid Support Forces, expressing optimism for military advancements and eventual lasting peace. He defended Russia’s veto on a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire, asserting it was influenced by the resolution’s perceived bias against the Sudanese government.

On Syria, in light of Bashar Assad’s ousting, Polyanskiy focused on Russia’s commitment to facilitating a peaceful transition and maintaining long-standing ties with the Syrian people. He indicated that Russia would continue to support Syria through its transitional challenges and reaffirmed its historical friendship, seeking constructive relationships in the region.

Dmitry Polyanskiy’s remarks illustrate Russia’s critical stance toward U.S. foreign policy in Ukraine while highlighting Saudi Arabia’s rising diplomatic role amidst escalating regional crises. His comments reflect Russia’s strategic perspectives on conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Syria, advocating for unity among Arab nations and reaffirming Russia’s commitment to regional stability and cooperation. Furthermore, the dialogue suggests potential shifts in international diplomatic power dynamics, particularly involving Saudi Arabia’s growing influence as a mediator.
