Ethiopia Introduces 100 Electric Buses to Boost Sustainable Transport

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to enhance public transportation in Ethiopia’s capital. Assembled locally, the buses feature advanced technologies for efficiency and will serve dedicated transit routes. This initiative supports the government’s goal of increasing electric vehicles significantly over the next decade while reducing reliance on fuel-powered vehicles.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has implemented a significant initiative by introducing 100 electric buses in the capital of Ethiopia. This move aims to promote electric mobility within the country, marking a progressive step towards sustainable transportation.

The electric buses, assembled by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, feature components sourced from China. They are equipped with an Integrated Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System, enhancing the efficiency and user experience of public transport, as reported by the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.

These buses now serve the city’s residents along the newly established Bus Rapid Transit route, offering a modern and convenient commuting experience. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, noted that these zero-emission vehicles will enrich the public transport network and provide passengers with a comfortable riding experience.

The buses will operate on dedicated lanes, optimizing travel times for commuters. As part of addressing public transportation shortages in Addis Ababa, they are set to offer residents a more efficient and sustainable travel option.

Currently, over 100,000 electric vehicles are in use throughout Ethiopia, with plans from the government to increase this number to 500,000 within the next decade, targeting a transition that will replace 95 percent of fuel-powered vehicles. To expedite this transformation, the Ethiopian government has enacted a ban on the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles, following a rise in global fuel prices.

The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa marks a significant stride towards sustainable transportation in Ethiopia.
