Ethiopia Launches Electric Bus Fleet in Addis Ababa to Promote Sustainable Transport

Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa has introduced 100 electric buses to enhance urban transportation, utilizing local assembly and imported components. This initiative aims to reduce emissions and improve commuting efficiency. The government plans to expand its electric vehicle fleet significantly in the coming years while banning gasoline and diesel imports to promote sustainability.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has recently launched a fleet of 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital, showcasing a major advancement in electric mobility within the country. As reported by Xinhuanet, these buses were locally assembled by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, incorporating components sourced from China. They feature an Integrated Intelligent Transportation System and advanced Fare Collection System technology, as noted by the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.

The newly introduced electric buses are operational along the city’s new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, providing a convenient commuting alternative for residents. According to Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, these buses are environmentally sustainable, producing zero emissions while enhancing public transportation comfort and capacity. Furthermore, the designated bus lanes for these vehicles will promote quicker travel for commuters.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics reports that over 100,000 electric vehicles are currently in operation nationwide, with ambitions to increase this figure to 500,000 over the next decade. This initiative is aimed at substituting 95% of gasoline-powered vehicles with electric ones, indicating a robust commitment to sustainable transportation.

To expedite this transition towards electric mobility, the Ethiopian government has enacted a ban on the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles in response to the global increase in fuel prices reported early last year.
