Niger Police Arrest Soldier for Alleged Armed Robbery and Assault

Police in Niger State arrested soldier Private Sadiq Sani for allegedly robbing and assaulting businessman Abdulrahman Salihu on Eid-el-Fitr. The soldier reportedly attempted a fraudulent money transfer, leading to a violent confrontation where Salihu was severely injured. In Niger State, Nigeria, Police have apprehended Private Sadiq Sani, a soldier accused of armed robbery and assault against businessman Abdulrahman Salihu. The incident occurred on Eid-el-Fitr when Sani purportedly visited Salihu’s shop to purchase shirts, eventually demanding account details for a supposed electronic money transfer.

It is reported that Sani sent a fraudulent transfer alert to Salihu. When Salihu doubted the transaction and insisted on receiving the payment before completing the sale, Sani revealed a knife and violently assaulted him. The accused seriously injured Salihu, severing his arm before fleeing the scene.

Attempts by neighbors to apprehend Sani were unsuccessful, as he escaped to his residence in Limawa, Minna. However, police from the Central Divisional Police Command later located him and engaged in a confrontation to effect his arrest.

The military police were notified, and Captain U.S Ibrahim from the 313 Brigade is overseeing a thorough investigation into the incident. He stated, “We are taking him to the defence headquarters to formally arraign him to face court martial for his dismissal after which will be brought back to the police for his prosecution in court.”

Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the arrest of Private Sani and an accomplice. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Salihu suffered severe injuries, which included three fingers being severed during the altercation. Both suspects have been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations and prosecution.

The arrest of Private Sadiq Sani highlights a serious issue of criminal behavior within the military context, particularly concerning violent acts against civilians.
