Namibia’s Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed a locust outbreak in the Zambezi Region, attributed to recent heavy rainfall. The infestation is observed in hopper and fledgling stages across various constituencies. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform of Namibia has confirmed a resurgence of locust activity in the Zambezi Region, particularly following recent heavy rainfall. This outbreak, seen in both hopper and fledgling phases, has raised concerns of a potential second wave of infestation. The affected areas encompass floodplains near Ibbu along the Chobe River and about 11 constituencies within the region.

Initially reported in early February, the infestation has thrived due to favorable breeding conditions characterized by abundant green vegetation. This phenomenon is not limited to Namibia but extends to neighboring countries, including Zambia, Botswana, and Angola. Farmers are being advised to promptly report any locust sightings to their nearest Agricultural Development Centre to assist containment efforts. The ongoing drying of vegetation is projected to encourage locusts to form more mobile groups that may migrate northward in smaller swarms.

In response to the locust threat, the government has deployed agricultural officials equipped with vehicle-mounted sprayers and mist blowers. Ongoing monitoring and control operations are crucial to reducing the insects’ spread. This latest outbreak comes on the heels of several incidents in prior years, including one in 2020 that devastated over 700,000 hectares across various northern regions.
