TotalEnergies Enhances Emission Reduction and Reliability at FPSOs in Angola

TotalEnergies is improving emissions and reliability at its FPSOs in Angola by implementing measures to reduce fuel gas usage and enhance energy efficiency, leading to significant CO2 reductions and projected maintenance cost savings.

TotalEnergies is taking significant steps to decrease emissions and enhance the reliability of its Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels in offshore Block 17, Angola. The company has initiated several measures aimed at reducing fuel gas usage and minimizing emissions related to power generation on these platforms.

Power generation on the FPSOs is facilitated by multiple gas turbogenerators, which occasionally run outside their optimal performance ranges. In an effort to address this issue, the team is focused on improving energy efficiency — implementing measures such as LED lighting and upgraded air filters for the turbines.

Additionally, there are initiatives aimed at bolstering the reliability of turbogenerators while proactively anticipating potential failures. A critical part of this involves optimizing operations by improving power sharing between the Girassol and Dalia FPSOs and fine-tuning load management on the Pazflor FPSO.

The project also includes the revision of load shedding procedures on the existing power generation nodes, alongside the introduction of AI-assisted dynamic load shedding to boost operational efficiency.

By the end of 2022, these collective efforts led to a substantial reduction of 29,000 metric tons in CO2 emissions, with an estimated potential to reach 51,000 metric tons reduction within a year. Furthermore, TotalEnergies anticipates savings of about $13 million in maintenance costs over the next two decades due to these improvements.

TotalEnergies is actively working to reduce emissions and enhance the operational reliability of its FPSOs in Angola. By implementing energy efficiency measures and optimizing power generation techniques, the company successfully decreased CO2 emissions significantly last year and expects further benefits in cost savings and emissions reductions going forward. The ongoing use of innovative technology, such as AI, also promises to improve overall efficiency.
