NiMet Predicts Thunderstorms and Haze Across Nigeria This Weekend

NiMet forecasts thunderstorms and haze in Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday. Key regions include moderate dust haze in Northwest states and isolated thunderstorms in Adamawa and Taraba. Caution is urged for strong winds and dust, and the public is advised to stay informed through NiMet updates.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting thunderstorms and a hazy atmosphere across Nigeria starting Sunday through Tuesday. The announcement, made on Saturday in Abuja, highlights several regions that will experience varying weather conditions during this three-day period.

Specifically, NiMet forecasts moderate dust haze affecting Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa states. Additionally, isolated thunderstorms are expected in Adamawa and Taraba states throughout this forecast.

In the North-central part of Nigeria, conditions are expected to be partly cloudy in the morning. However, afternoon and evening hours will likely see isolated thunderstorms over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, as well as Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States. For the South, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in areas including Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, with further thunderstorms expected later on.

Looking ahead to Monday, NiMet predicts a shift in weather patterns, with sunny skies forecasted across the northern region, but morning thunderstorms will still occur in parts of Taraba and Adamawa states. As the day progresses, thunderstorms are expected to move into Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe states. In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms will likely affect Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue states, with further thunderstorms predicted.

On Tuesday, sunny skies with cloud patches are expected in the North, but morning thunderstorms will still occur in places like Adamawa and Taraba States. NiMet also notes that thunderstorms will hit parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba later in the day. In the North-Central region, conditions will be partly cloudy in the morning, with thunderstorms forecasted for the afternoon and evening in the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger states.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s latest forecast indicates that thunderstorms and haziness will impact various regions of Nigeria over the next few days. Residents, especially in northern regions, are advised to take precautions due to strong winds and dust particles. People are also encouraged to monitor ongoing weather updates from NiMet to stay informed. This foresight is crucial for effective planning, particularly for airline operators.
