Omani Soldier Fined After Online Vigilante Paedophile Sting

An Omani soldier, part of a pipe band, has been fined for his involvement in an online paedophile sting while attending the World Pipe Band Championships. Hamdan Alkhamali, 47, believed he was conversing with a 12-year-old girl over a period from late July to early August 2024; however, he was actually engaging with an adult member of a vigilante group.

Alkhamali admitted to making inappropriate sexual comments to the decoy and acknowledged the illegality of his actions. The Glasgow Sheriff Court imposed a fine of £1,275 and placed him on the sex offenders register after he pled guilty to sending written communication to someone he presumed to be a child.

On August 17, 2023, Alkhamali was confronted by the vigilante group at Glasgow Green while participating in the competition with fellow personnel from the Omani armed forces. He had initiated contact with the decoy via the social messaging service SayHi on July 29, and expressed intentions to meet in person, insisting that their discussions be kept private.

The soldier even disclosed that the girl’s age did not concern him, although he later expressed fear regarding potential legal repercussions. When addressing the group, Alkhamali confirmed he had engaged in these discussions and was subsequently arrested. Following this, he was allowed to return to Oman but was later extradited back to Scotland for judicial proceedings.

Scotland’s Sheriff Matthew Jackson KC remarked on the case’s peculiarities during the court proceedings, having received preliminary correspondence from the Ministry of Defence and the Sultan of Oman before the hearing. He indicated that he anticipated the Omani authorities would provide the necessary counselling similar to that available in the United Kingdom.

Sheriff Jackson cautioned Alkhamali, stating, “Do not think that you are getting away with this just because you are a foreign national. I expect your government will give a very full undertaking to see that you get the counselling that you require.”
