Two Men Receive Seven-Year Sentences for Defilement of Minor

Two men, Joseph Boateng and Hashim Zurakanini, were sentenced to seven years in prison for defilement, following their conviction in a case involving a 12-year-old girl who was lured from her home under false pretenses. The incident occurred on May 22, 2025, when Boateng allegedly intercepted a 12-year-old girl who was simply on her way home from fetching water. It is alleged that he enticed her with a promise of GHC 2,000, luring her to his residence at Kas Market, where the crime escalated.

Once at his home, Boateng reportedly facilitated the assault by inviting Zurakanini, a local driver, who proceeded to sexually exploit the minor. The abhorrent act was compounded by Zurakanini’s false claim that he needed to use his sperm for a charm.

The case quickly reached the court, overseen by His Honour Yinigabagae Ketha, where both individuals were found guilty. Boateng was convicted for aiding the crime, while Zurakanini was convicted for the actual defilement of the young girl.

Deputy Superintendent of Police John Ichor, acting as the Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Region, confirmed the sentences, stressing the importance of protecting young lives. He urged the public to remain vigilant and to swiftly report any suspicious activities to ensure offenders do not escape justice.
