Arnolfo Teves Jr. Arrested by Timor-Leste Immigration Authorities

Arnolfo Teves Jr., former lawmaker from Negros Oriental, was arrested in Timor-Leste by immigration police. Former Negros Oriental 3rd District Representative Arnolfo Teves Jr. was apprehended by the immigration authorities in Timor-Leste, as confirmed by his legal counsel, Ferdinand Topacio, on Wednesday, May 28. The arrest occurred on the evening of May 27 at Teves’ residence, according to Topacio, who stated that immigration police took Teves into custody around 8 PM local time.

Topacio revealed that in addition to Teves, Dr. Joao Sera, Teves’ legal representative in Timor-Leste, was also arrested. Notably, Topacio expressed concerns, stating, “No warrant or any written authority was shown to Mr. Teves and Dr. Sera as to the cause of detention.” He further alleged that Dr. Sera faced rough treatment at the hands of the immigration police during the incident.

Currently, both Teves and Dr. Sera are being held at the Ministry of the Interior’s compound. Topacio mentioned that counsel has been allowed access to Teves while he is detained. In fact, another lawyer is also present with Teves inside the compound, indicating legal support is being provided.

Teves has been living without proper documentation since his passport was revoked by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), following a Manila court order. He faces serious charges linked to the massacre that occurred on March 4, 2023, in Pamplona, Negros Oriental, resulting in the deaths of Governor Roel Degamo and nine others. Additionally, Teves has been labeled a terrorist by the Anti-Terrorism Council in connection with this tragedy and other alleged related activities in Negros Oriental.
