BYD has overtaken Tesla in monthly pure electric vehicle registrations in Europe for the first time, signaling a significant change in the EV market landscape. In a notable shift within the European electric vehicle (EV) market, BYD, a prominent Chinese automaker, surpassed Tesla in monthly registrations of pure EVs for the first time in April 2025. This change was marked by a staggering 169% year-on-year increase in BYD’s registrations, while Tesla experienced a significant downturn with a 49% fall, according to Jato Dynamics, a market research firm. As per Jato Dynamics, registrations of EVs produced by Chinese companies increased by 59% year-on-year in April, totaling nearly 15,300 units. This growth considerably outstrips the 26% increase reported by established automakers from Europe, Japan, Korea, and the United States.

Moreover, during the first four months of 2025, China’s auto production and sales exceeded 10 million units, marking a historical high, with 642,000 NEVs exported—an impressive 52.6% rise compared to the previous year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. The surge in global expansion efforts from Chinese brands continues apace; BYD has entered the Swiss market, Xpeng has begun operations in Bahrain, and IM Motors is now present in Australia. Additionally, companies like Chery and SAIC are taking proactive steps to establish their own maritime logistics fleets.

At the same time, the international expansion of the battery production sector is gaining momentum. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a leading EV battery manufacturer in China, has announced a substantial $1.2 billion investment for a new battery factory in Indonesia. Meanwhile, BYD’s first European vehicle plant in Hungary is set to begin production soon, and Great Wall Motors is accelerating its digital auto plant project in Brazil.

With ongoing advancements in overseas plant construction, increased control over shipping logistics, and a perceived reduction in global trade tensions, the forecast for Chinese auto exports remains optimistic. This trajectory suggests even greater opportunities for growth in the expanding global market.
