The surge in EV adoption is evidenced by the statistics provided by the Automotive Business Council. Between 2019 and 2023, annual sales of electric vehicles—encompassing both battery electric and hybrid options—spiked from over 400 units to more than 7,700. Meanwhile, the broader market for new cars in South Africa witnessed a solid 22% rise year-on-year in May, totaling 45,308 units sold. Notably, dealerships were responsible for at least 80% of these sales. The Automotive Business Council attributed this growth to relatively stable economic conditions experienced earlier in the year, signaling a positive trend for the automotive sector overall.
