Arrests Made in the Murder of Free State Police Officer

Four Lesotho nationals were arrested in connection with the murder of Constable Justice Sephooa in Free State. Following a thorough investigation by a multidisciplinary police team, the suspects were apprehended in Stilfontein and will face murder charges. Additionally, four suspects have been arrested for the murders of two police officers in a separate incident, showcasing ongoing challenges in maintaining law and order in South Africa.

On Saturday, four individuals from Lesotho were apprehended in connection with the murder of Constable Justice Sephooa, a police officer from the Free State. Constable Sephooa, who served in the Ficksburg crime intelligence unit, was tragically shot at his residence during an ambush. The suspects, aged between 34 and 36, are reportedly in South Africa illegally.

The arrests were made possible by a Free State multidisciplinary team that included the Hawks’ serious organised crime unit, along with the North West Tactical Response Team and the National Intervention Unit. Following a thorough investigation, the suspects were located and arrested in Stilfontein, North West, before being transferred to Bethlehem. According to Colonel Katlego Mogale, the incident occurred on January 21 when two unidentified men shot Constable Sephooa twice before fleeing the scene.

All four suspects are scheduled to appear in the Ficksburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, facing murder charges. Colonel Mogale noted that Lt. General (Dr/Adv) SG Lebeya, the national head of the directorate for priority crime investigation, commended the effective and professional efforts of the multi-disciplinary team in bringing the suspects to justice.

Additionally, a similar incident has led to the arrest of four suspects connected to the murders of Constables Sipho Mohapi and Gedione Motloung, who were killed while responding to a house robbery in Phuthaditjhaba on January 4. One suspect, Marasane Kabelo Anmony, a South African aged 27, was arrested on January 16, while Pakiso Lethako, a 32-year-old Lesotho national, was apprehended on January 15. An accomplice, Lakaje Piet Thetha, age 53, was detained two days later.

The recent arrests highlight ongoing issues concerning violent crime in South Africa and the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel. The incidents involving Constable Sephooa and the officers Mohapi and Motloung underline the risks associated with police work, particularly in high-crime areas. The collaboration among various police units showcases a commitment to tackling serious crimes and ensuring public safety.

The arrests of the four Lesotho nationals for Constable Sephooa’s murder and the ongoing efforts to apprehend those responsible for the killings of other officers illustrate the serious challenges faced by law enforcement in South Africa. The successful operation reflects a dedicated approach to crime fighting and the importance of inter-agency collaboration in achieving justice.
