On Monday night, northern Morocco experienced a 5.2-magnitude earthquake, with tremors reaching the capital, Rabat. This event rapidly triggered fears and recalled traumatic memories from the devastating 2023 Atlas earthquake. The epicenter was located in Brikcha, Ouazzane province, a less mountainous region compared to the earlier disaster’s impact area.

Residents expressed deep-seated fears associated with potential destruction. Aicha Khayi, a local, recounted her panic as she felt the tremors and rushed to alert neighbors, haunted by memories of loss from the September 2023 quake that claimed relatives’ lives.

Brikcha, which includes 25 villages and approximately 9,400 residents, differs significantly from the Atlas region. Although some buildings showed minor cracks, Nasser Jabour, head of the National Institute of Geophysics, asserted that those impacts were manageable and further destruction was not anticipated due to the quake’s relatively moderate magnitude and Brikcha’s geography.
