Cyber Crime Inflicts Rp 33 Billion Loss on Indonesia

As of August 2015, cybercrime in Indonesia has cost over Rp 33.29 billion. The country has seen 36.6 million cyberattacks during this period, with a substantial number of criminals arrested. Growing internet usage and advancements in technology have contributed to this alarming trend, which includes hacking incidents involving luxury cars.

Cybercrime in Indonesia has resulted in a staggering loss of Rp 33.29 billion as of August 2015, according to Police Comm. Gen. Agung Setya. Over a span of three years, approximately 36.6 million cyberattacks were recorded. Despite efforts to combat these crimes, Indonesia remains vulnerable, as indicated in the 2013 Data Security Threat report.

From 2012 to April 2015, the Indonesian Police’s IT/Cyber Crime division apprehended 497 individuals suspected of cybercrime, of which 389 were foreign nationals and 108 were Indonesians. The rise in cybercrime correlates with the increase in internet users and faster internet connections within the country. Law enforcement is particularly concerned about the emergence of new types of cybercrime, including the hacking of luxury vehicles, facilitated by advanced internet synchronization technologies.

Setya highlighted a notable example of this trend, referencing 6,000 cases in London involving car thefts through hacking keyless-entry systems. As cyber threats evolve, continuous monitoring and proactive measures are essential to safeguard both individuals and enterprises in Indonesia from the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by cybercriminals.
