NiDCOM Calls for Investigation into Suspicious Death of Nigerian Footballer Abubakar Lawal
NiDCOM is investigating the suspicious death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian football player, who reportedly fell from a shopping mall balcony in Uganda. Initial reports suggested a motorcycle accident. Calls for a thorough inquiry have emerged from various Nigerian officials, including fellow players and the Nigerian Embassy, addressing concerns over the conflicting accounts surrounding his death.
The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has deemed the death of Abubakar Lawal, a former junior international and player for Vipers SC in Uganda, to be suspicious. In light of this tragedy, NiDCOM will seek a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death. Local reports indicate conflicting accounts concerning the events leading to his demise.
Lawal’s passing was reported by his football club and Ugandan authorities on Monday, initially believed to be the result of a motorcycle accident. However, further information from the Uganda Police indicated he fell from a shopping mall balcony in the capital city of Kampala. Preliminary details suggest that Lawal arrived at the mall to meet a friend, identified as Omary Naima, who remained in their room prior to the incident.
According to the police statement, Naima left Lawal preparing tea before visiting a gaming center within the mall. Shortly after, around 8:00 AM, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony and was subsequently taken to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was declared deceased. The evolving narrative surrounding his death has raised concerns among fellow Nigerians, including Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa.
Dabiri-Erewa has responded to the growing calls for clarity, stating that the borderline contradictory reports suggest a need for further investigation. She has been in communication with Nigerian authorities, including the Nigeria Football Federation, urging them to collaborate with the Ugandan government to ensure justice for Lawal. The Nigerian Embassy in Uganda is also actively pursuing the matter, with Ambassador Shama Shanga demanding an investigation into the case.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed her sentiments on the issue, emphasizing the necessity of a thorough and transparent inquiry into Lawal’s death. She stated, “This is so sad. NiDCOM will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation. May his soul RIP and God give the family the fortitude to bear this loss.” Lawal, who was 29 years old, had transitioned from clubs in Nigeria to play in Uganda, where he joined Vipers SC after stints in Wikki Tourists and As Kigali.
The death of Abubakar Lawal has raised significant suspicions and demands for a careful investigation from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission. Reports indicate conflicting information about the circumstances of his passing while he was in Uganda. NiDCOM is committed to clarifying the situation, ensuring that justice is served for his untimely death, and supporting his grieving family during this tragic time.
