Rofiat Lawal, a National Youth Service Corps member stationed in Ibadan, Oyo State, has become a victim of kidnapping along the Benin-Ore Expressway. According to a Facebook post by an acquaintance, Lawal was on her way back from Benin, Edo State, to her primary place of assignment when she was taken by unidentified abductors. Reports indicate that the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of ₦20 million for her release.
In her plea for assistance, the acquaintance detailed Lawal’s struggles, noting that she financed her education by working at Dufil Company in Benin. She revealed that Lawal was traveling in a bus bound for Ore when the abduction occurred. Her family, described as less privileged, faces difficulties in meeting the ransom demand, prompting her friend to seek help from the public for any potential assistance.
The Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, Odoba Oche, confirmed the kidnapping incident during a conversation with reporters, highlighting that the authorities were informed only after Lawal’s parents reported her abduction. Oche stated that security agencies have been alerted for appropriate action, although he was unaware of any ransom negotiations. He emphasized the importance of corps members informing the NYSC before any travel, particularly to avoid night journeys.
The abduction of Rofiat Lawal, a dedicated corps member, has raised concerns regarding safety on the Benin-Ore Expressway. This incident highlights the need for greater awareness and adherence to travel advisories for National Youth Service Corps members. The call for assistance underscores the pressing issue of kidnappings in Nigeria and the urgent need for community support in such distressing situations.
