In a conversation with Vicki Notaro on the podcast “You Had Me At Hello,” Katja shared, “We had a little engagement party in Dublin. So I thought the whole thing was done. But then my mam calls me up and she wants to throw us a whole traditional engagement.”

Katja described the importance of traditional engagements in Burundi, stating, “I would have grown up going to these traditional engagements. The traditional engagement there is way bigger than the white wedding. They go all out. There’s Burundian drummers, Burundian dancers, you wear traditional clothing.” Her fiancé Daragh is excited about his impending visit, expressing enthusiasm for both Burundi and the African continent, as it will be his first experience.

She mentioned, “[My family] are mad to meet him! It’s funny because he’s going to be the only white person there. So he’ll know how I feel!” Katja also revealed details of their future wedding plans, indicating they will host a destination wedding with friends and family who are able to travel, though she stated that this is not imminent. “This is the first hurdle. We’ll deal with this last year.”
