Thai authorities have apprehended a Singaporean man implicated in a series of global cyber attacks affecting over 70 organizations across multiple countries. The 39-year-old suspect, identified as Chia, was arrested in Bangkok following a coordinated effort with law enforcement in Singapore. He is accused of breaching various corporate databases, extracting sensitive information, and distributing this stolen data on the dark web. His detention was prompted by a complaint from a Thai company that received extortion threats via the social media account “@0mid16b,” demanding ransom to prevent the release of stolen customer data.

Commander Atip Pongsivapai from Thailand’s Technology Crime Suppression Division indicated that investigations into Chia’s activities commenced after the complaint was filed. Reports suggest that since 2020, he has compromised more than 70 entities, including 20 in Thailand alone. The authorities seized assets during the raid, including gold jewelry and luxurious items valued at approximately $300,000. Chia faces charges of extortion, unauthorized access to computer systems, and illegal residence in Thailand.

The cybersecurity firm Group-IB from Singapore provided assistance in this case, revealing that the suspect operated under various aliases such as Altdos, Desorden, GhostR, and 0mid16B. He is allegedly connected to an immense repository of stolen data, approximately 13 terabytes, affecting sectors like healthcare, finance, retail, and government. The investigation continues as officials assess the full extent of the cyber crimes attributed to Chia.
