NDLEA Cracks Down on Drug Trafficking: Recent Arrests and Seizures in Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently arrested an Angolan businessman for attempting to traffic cocaine at Kano airport, leading to multiple drug seizures and arrests. The agency highlighted ongoing operations and educational initiatives aimed at reducing drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended a 42-year-old Angolan businessman, Mbala Abuba, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) on February 25, 2025. He was attempting to smuggle cocaine to Istanbul, Turkey, having ingested 120 pellets containing a total of 1.829 kilograms of the illicit substance. His arrest occurred at the screening point while he was trying to board an Egypt Air flight.

After the body scan confirmed drug ingestion, Mr. Abuba was placed under observation and subsequently expelled the cocaine in seven excretions. In his statement, he claimed he had previously operated a township delivery service business in Angola before becoming involved in drug trafficking, illustrating the intersection of legitimate businesses and the illicit drug trade.

Additional drug seizures included a thwarted attempt by Ebuka Igwe, an auto parts dealer, who tried to send 1.10 kilograms of cocaine hidden in vehicle propellers to Angola from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. MDLEA’s timely intervention led to his arrest on February 24, 2025, highlighting ongoing vigilance against drug trafficking operations.

Another significant seizure occurred on February 23, 2025, when operatives arrested Ezechi Cyprian for attempting to transport 5.40 kilograms of cocaine to Owerri in a Toyota Sienna. The agency also discovered cannabis concealed within two mattresses at Tin Can Island port, resulting in the arrest of the consignee, Bamidele Joseph, who had imported 63.75 kilograms of cannabis from Canada.

In coordinated operations across Nigeria, reporting from Delta state revealed the agency’s destruction of over 52,000 kilograms of cannabis following a raid on a farmland. Additional arrests included suspects found in possession of significant quantities of skunk and tramadol across various states, including Oyo and Osun.

These efforts were part of NDLEA’s broader strategy under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative, which focuses on public sensitization through outreach programs in schools and communities. Activities included lectures and discussions aimed at raising awareness among youth and local communities about the dangers of drug abuse, thereby promoting preventive measures.

The ongoing efforts of the NDLEA to combat drug trafficking in Nigeria are underscored by various successful operations leading to multiple arrests and seizures of illicit drugs. The agency’s proactive measures are crucial in addressing drug-related issues, as evidenced by recent crackdowns on traffickers attempting to smuggle significant quantities of cocaine and cannabis. Additionally, the emphasis on public education and awareness signifies a comprehensive approach to tackling drug abuse in communities.
