RSA and Namibia Border Security Strengthened Through Cross-Border Operations

A recent cross-border operation conducted from February 27 to March 2 aimed to mitigate crime along the borders between the Republic of South Africa (RSA) and Namibia. This operation involved multiple agencies, including the South African Police Service, Customs, the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency, and the Border Management Authority, resulting in considerable achievements regarding border security.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, indicated that actions such as search and seizure operations, vehicle checkpoints, and border patrols were employed to combat prevalent crimes in the area. Throughout the operation, 1,065 vehicles and 1,489 individuals were searched, leading to the arrest of individuals for illegal drug possession and undocumented status.

During the enforcement activities, authorities seized Mandrax valued at R4,525, along with cash suspected to be connected to criminal activities. Additional confiscations included fishing nets, fish traps, illicit cigarettes valued at R150,156, and tobacco products worth R2,000. Moreover, fines totaling R14,600 were issued for various traffic violations encountered during the operation.

Colonel Ehlers reiterated that such operations would persist across the RSA and its neighboring countries to enhance border safety and security. Citizens are encouraged to report criminal activities through the MySAPS app or by contacting the National Extortion Hotline if necessary.
