A 36-year-old British tourist was allegedly raped by a man she met on Instagram during her stay at a hotel in the Mahipalpur area of Delhi. Following her complaint, both the accused, including a hotel staff member, were arrested by the Delhi Police under charges of rape and molestation according to the Bharatiya Nayay Sanhita.
The woman had traveled to India on March 7 and spent four days in Goa before arriving in Delhi on March 11. She met the assailant, identified as Kailash Gautam, whom she knew as “Veer” online. Gautam picked her up from the airport, and they checked into a hotel around 11 am.
Upon entering the room, Gautam began consuming alcohol and subsequently misbehaved with her, leading to sexual assault. Despite her attempts to resist, he allegedly assaulted her multiple times. When she tried to leave, hotel staff misjudged the situation, believing she was simply intoxicated, and allowed Gautam to take her back to the room.
While leaving the room again, the woman encountered Wasim, a housekeeping staff member, who inappropriately touched her in the lift. After shouting at him, she managed to escape. Gautam allegedly assaulted her once more before departing the hotel.
The following morning, the woman sought medical attention due to severe pain, prompting the hospital to notify the police. Gautam was apprehended shortly thereafter, having evaded capture by frequently changing locations. Both accused were subsequently presented in a Delhi court and remanded to judicial custody, while the High Commission was informed of the incident.
In summary, the incident involving the British tourist highlights serious issues of safety in hotel environments, particularly for foreign visitors. The prompt action of the police resulted in the swift arrest of both accused, emphasizing the importance of addressing sexual violence and ensuring the well-being of victims. The case remains under judicial consideration while authorities continue to provide support to the woman.
