Mozambique: Gloria Nobre’s Unlawful Detention Sparks Outcry
Gloria Nobre, treasurer for Venancio Mondlane, is unlawfully detained in Maputo without legal assistance or family access. Concerns for her health are raised, and the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights vows to address her rights violations with the Attorney-General’s Office.
Gloria Nobre, treasurer for former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, has been detained unlawfully at a police station in Maputo, as reported by “Mediafax.” Her detention occurred without an arrest warrant on Wednesday and she has been held at the eighth precinct without family or legal access.
According to Mondlane, Nobre, aged 59, was taken by plainclothes police officers in the Alto Mae neighborhood of Maputo while she was with her daughter, Alina, after paying respects at her sister’s grave. Alina reported that the officers lacked a warrant but displayed a document on their cellphone, the contents of which were unclear.
Alina expressed her concerns regarding her mother’s health, emphasizing that Nobre suffers from high blood pressure and asthma. She stated, “My mother suffers from high blood pressure and from asthma. I need to know how she is.”
The family’s lawyer attempted entry to see Nobre but was denied by police. The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) appointed three lawyers to assist her, yet all were similarly denied access. CDD announced plans to file a complaint with the Attorney-General’s Office regarding the infringement of Nobre’s legal rights.
Anonymously, agents from the Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) informed CDD that Nobre would not be accessible to her family or legal representatives for 48 hours due to an ongoing investigation.
In summary, Gloria Nobre’s unlawful detention raises serious concerns regarding her rights and health. The lack of legal access and the denial of family visits highlight potential violations of civil liberties. The actions of the police have prompted the CDD to seek legal recourse and address these infringements with the Attorney-General’s Office.
