Proton Competition Faces Challenges Yet Shows Promise in Qatar
Proton Competition’s Ford Mustang LMGT3 faced challenges in Qatar but showed strong performances from drivers Ben Tuck and Bernardo Sousa. Despite a fire incident and a technical issue during the race, the team had a positive outlook, finishing tenth and aiming for improvement in the next event at Imola.
In their recent participation in Qatar, Proton Competition’s Ford Mustang LMGT3 experienced both challenges and triumphs. Despite leaving the event disappointed, the team found motivation in various aspects of their performance. The preparations faced a setback when the 77 entry, driven by Ben Tuck, caught fire during the initial testing session, preventing further participation in the pre-event Prologue.
However, following extensive efforts, the car rejoined the track during the first practice session. Bernardo Sousa, who was now driving, managed to qualify it 16th among a field of 18 strong competitors. During the subsequent Qatar 1812km race, Tuck demonstrated remarkable skill as he navigated the Mustang to second in class before a pit stop allowed him to lead the field briefly.
Tuck, participating in his full-time FIA WEC debut, enjoyed his time in the lead until his tires diminished, forcing him to relinquish his position. Unfortunately, the prospect of a strong finish was thwarted when Sousa encountered a technical problem that halted him on the track. Tuck expressed his disappointment, stating, “I’m just sad for the team, as they did such a brilliant job getting the car ready for the race.”
In the sister 88 Mustang, newcomer Stefano Gattuso achieved an impressive qualifying position within the top ten, as did his compatriot Giammarco Levorato in the Hyperpole shootout. Their steady performance, alongside Dennis Olsen from Norway, ultimately resulted in a points finish for the team, placing them tenth. Proton Competition aims to leverage this progress as they prepare for the next round at the 6 Hours of Imola in Italy, scheduled for April 18-20.
Proton Competition faced significant challenges during their recent outing in Qatar with their Ford Mustang LMGT3. Despite setbacks during preparation and technical issues during the race, they identified areas of encouragement and skillful performances, especially from drivers Tuck and Sousa. With a points finish in hand and positive performances from both Mustang entries, the team looks forward to the upcoming 6 Hours of Imola.
