Tragic Death of Bangladeshi Youth in South Africa: A Family’s Loss
Kamrul Islam, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi youth, was shot dead in Wepener, South Africa, during a robbery attempt. A tragic incident occurred in Wepener, Free State Province, South Africa, where a Bangladeshi man, Kamrul Islam, aged 33, was fatally shot by two assailants on Thursday evening. Kamrul, originally from Karmullahpur village in Daganbhuiyan upazila, Feni, had migrated to South Africa 12 years ago in search of better economic opportunities. After initially working, he established his own business.
According to Kamruzzaman, Kamrul’s younger brother, the attack took place around 9:00 PM as Kamrul was closing his shop. The robbers confronted him at gunpoint, stealing cash and valuables before attempting to access more funds at his car. During this confrontation, one of the assailants shot Kamrul in the chest, resulting in his immediate death.
Kamrul had recently constructed a new home and was planning to return to Bangladesh in a few months to marry, as stated by his brother. The family, who endured the loss of their father previously, reported that their mother has been in distress following the tragedy. In response, they sought assistance from the Bangladesh embassy to facilitate the repatriation of Kamrul’s remains.
SM Azharul Islam, the upazila nirbahi officer, expressed the administration’s willingness to help Kamrul’s family with the necessary arrangements regarding his body’s return. They pledged support if needed, demonstrating communal solidarity in this time of sorrow.
