President Chapo Visits Cyclone-Hit Areas in Mozambique, Calls for Life Protection

On Saturday, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo made a significant visit to areas impacted by Cyclone Jude, emphasizing the urgent need to safeguard human lives amidst increasing extreme weather events. During his visit to the Entente accommodation center in Nampula, he spoke directly to the hardship faced by approximately 400 families who were displaced from the submerged Sangane village.

President Chapo highlighted that nearly 100,000 individuals have been affected by the cyclone, with the confirmed death toll currently standing at 14. He expressed his solidarity with the province, stating, “I am here because Nampula was the province that suffered most from the cyclone.”

The President commended the efforts of the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD), which, in conjunction with local committees, has worked diligently to limit casualties. He also inspected critical infrastructure, noting the damage inflicted on key roadways in Nampula province, where access remains severely restricted.

One of the sites he assessed was a crucial 200-meter bridge over the Monapo River in Meconta district, part of the primary north-south highway (EN1), as well as a second bridge over the Mecuburi River, both of which have suffered damage. Chapo announced that contractors are being mobilized to initiate repairs, acknowledging the extensive damage, stating, “The damage to the roads is enormous.”
