A recent report by the Association of Kenyan Insurers (AKI) reveals that in 2024, Toyota vehicles experienced the highest theft rate in Kenya. The data was gathered from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, indicating that 54.91 percent of all stolen vehicles were Toyotas. This alarming statistic underscores the brand’s vulnerability to theft in the region.
In addition to Toyotas, several other vehicle makes also faced significant theft incidents. Isuzu constituted 12.88 percent of stolen vehicles, while Mazda accounted for 7.06 percent. Furthermore, Nissan made up 5.83 percent, and Mitsubishi represented 3.99 percent of theft cases.
The total number of stolen vehicles reported in Kenya during 2024 was 327, a notable reduction of 28 percent compared to the 419 vehicles stolen in 2023. This decline suggests improving circumstances regarding vehicle security, yet the prominence of Toyota remains a serious concern for owners.
In summary, Toyota vehicles are overwhelmingly the most stolen in Kenya, comprising over half of all theft incidents in 2024. Despite the overall decrease in vehicle theft compared to the previous year, the prevalence of specific brands, particularly Toyota, highlights ongoing issues of security and theft in the automotive sector in Kenya.
