Man Arrested in Tonga for R1.2 Million Cash Seizure and Bribery Attempt

A 49-year-old man was arrested in Tonga, Mpumalanga, with R1.2 million in cash and attempted to bribe police officers. Following a tip-off regarding an unlicensed firearm, police seized large sums of money from his residence. He faces charges including money laundering and bribery, and is expected to appear in court soon.

On March 16, 2025, a 49-year-old man was apprehended by the Mpumalanga South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tonga for possessing R1.2 million in cash along with an undisclosed amount of Mozambican meticais. The arrest occurred following a tip-off regarding an unlicensed firearm, which prompted police to search the suspect’s residence in Tonga View.

During their search, officers discovered cash concealed under a mattress, in a wardrobe, and within a bag. Faced with imminent arrest, the suspect attempted to bribe the officers with R50,000; however, this effort was unsuccessful. Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane remarked on the failed bribery attempt and confirmed that the seized money would be part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspect is now facing multiple charges—including money laundering, bribery of a police officer, and violations of the Tax Administration Act—while the investigation continues. He is scheduled to appear in the Tonga Magistrate’s Court shortly to address these charges.

The arrest of the 49-year-old individual highlights ongoing efforts by the Mpumalanga SAPS to combat crime, particularly through initiatives like Operation Vala Umgodi.
