Three Tornadoes Confirmed in CSRA as Severe Weather Strikes
Three tornadoes were confirmed in the CSRA from severe storms on Sunday morning, with two EF-0 tornadoes in Burke County and one in Barnwell County. The National Weather Service conducted assessments following radar warnings. Additional tornadoes caused damage in Paulding and Mitchell counties, and significant destruction was reported in Alabama. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries across affected areas.
On Sunday morning, three tornadoes were confirmed in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) following severe storms. The National Weather Service conducted damage assessments in both Barnwell and Burke counties, identifying two EF-0 tornadoes in Burke County and one EF-0 tornado in Barnwell County. Tornado activity was expected, as radar indicated at least five tornado warnings prior to the confirmations, which were announced the following day.
The confirmed tornadoes in Burke County occurred east of Girard, while the Barnwell tornado touched down between Snelling and Barnwell. Despite receiving the lowest ratings on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, EF-0 tornadoes can still inflict significant damage. Additionally, tornado activity was noted in Georgia’s Paulding and Mitchell counties, as well as a twister that crossed Lake Murray in South Carolina.
The Lake Murray tornado, classified as EF-1, descended at 7:38 a.m. in Chapin, remaining on the ground for approximately ten minutes. This tornado caused concentrated damage in the Timberlake neighborhood, affecting Isle of Pines Drive and subsequently entered the lake before moving onto Indian Cove Road. The tornado boasted a width of 125 yards and traveled a distance of 5.8 miles with estimated peak winds around 90 mph.
In north Georgia’s Paulding County, an EF-1 tornado resulted in considerable destruction, damaging 14 homes due to fallen trees. Residents reported significant property damage, including missing gas station canopies and debris scattered across locations such as a Kroger supermarket. Despite the chaos, many residents, including Zach Burgess, escaped injury while reporting damage to their homes.
In Mitchell County, a tornado touched down at 6:15 a.m., damaging the Pebble City Baptist Church and community center. Pastor Ronnie Kinsaul expressed gratitude for their safety, saying, “The Lord was with us. He caused it to possibly jump over or go around us.” Fortunately, despite extensive property damage, there were no injuries reported in this area.
Across the broader region, including southeast Alabama, tornadoes caused additional fallout with downed power lines and road closures while a community shelter faced damages. Tragically, two fatalities occurred in Dallas County, and substantial damage was reported in Gordo from tornado activity.
In summary, the severe weather on Sunday resulted in three confirmed tornadoes in the CSRA, alongside significant damages in Paulding and Mitchell counties. The National Weather Service confirmed that these tornadoes, with the lowest ratings, can still cause substantial destruction. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and community members have come together to support those affected by the storms. The tornado activity extended beyond Georgia, impacting parts of Alabama as well, emphasizing the importance of preparedness during such severe weather events.
