NSCDC Apprehends 17 Suspects for Officer’s Killing, Oil Facility Attacks

The NSCDC arrested 17 individuals implicated in the murder of a corps officer and attacks on oil and gas installations. The arrests are a result of joint efforts led by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad. Investigations link the gang to various violent incidents, including an attack on the Petroleum Minister’s residence.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended a gang of 17 individuals, accused of murdering one of their personnel and assaulting oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta. The arrest occurred on January 12, 2025, and was executed by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad in conjunction with allied agencies.

Afolabi Babawale, the corps’ spokesman, indicated that these suspects had long been monitored by the NSCDC and the Tantita Security Service. The gang is believed to have previously attacked a joint base, resulting in the death of an Assistant Superintendent of NSCDC and the theft of a speedboat alongside firearms.

The preliminary investigation has further linked the gang to an attack on the residence of Petroleum Minister, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, on January 1. Babawale reported that inquiries are ongoing and that the suspects are expected to face trial soon. The operation yielded an AK47 rifle, empty magazines, military apparel, and boots from the suspects.

Babawale acknowledged the significant support of NSCDC’s Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, stressing that this backing has been essential for combating illegal bunkering and other criminal enterprises effectively. He noted that the logistics provided were crucial to the operation’s success.

In conclusion, the NSCDC’s recent apprehension of 17 suspects marks a significant step in addressing violence against its personnel and the ongoing attacks on oil and gas infrastructure in the Niger Delta. The effectiveness of their operations, supported by both the Commandant-General and allied agencies, demonstrates a commitment to enhancing security in the region. Further investigations and subsequent legal actions against the suspects are anticipated, underlining the NSCDC’s proactive stance toward combating criminal activities.
